time to sell?

Sell Your Business Now?

“The key is not spending time, but in investing it.” - Stephen Covey

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about abundance.

It feels strange to use that word in a time when so many resources seem scarce—time, margin, energy, cash flow. But the more I reflect, the more I realize how much has been built, how many assets we’ve created—not just financially, but relationally and operationally.

That reflection led me to a deep dive: where exactly is our wealth held? The answer surprised me—though maybe it shouldn’t have.

Over 90% of our net worth is tied up in our businesses, or in the real estate connected to those businesses.

90%.

We talk about diversification in investment strategy all the time. But when it comes to business owners, most of us are massively concentrated in a single asset: our company. From what we’ve seen across the marketplace, it’s not uncommon for business owners to have 50–90% of their wealth tied up in their business.

And while we’re diversified across a few businesses, we’re still not diversified in asset class. Warren Buffett says diversification is protection against ignorance—but also the key to long-term performance. Maybe there’s wisdom in taking a page from his book.

If you’re starting to think about retirement, long-term planning, or just reducing risk, you’re not alone. Many owners are beginning to ask:

Should I sell all—or part—of my business to diversify and protect what I’ve built?

Now is a great time to explore your options.

At Exceptional Business Advisors, we’ve developed practical tools and proven frameworks to help business owners think through what a healthy transition could look like. Whether you’re years away from selling or already feeling the pressure, we’re here to help you clarify the path forward.

And if you’re ready for a deeper dive, I’ve written a book—Selling Main Street—that walks through the process step-by-step. I also created a digital course for those looking to apply the full framework to their unique situation.

So the real question is: What’s stopping you?

Let’s talk.
